This one’s for our Southampton art lovers out there!  The Southampton City Art Gallery has planned some new and exciting exhibitions featuring world-famous artists and their work. From the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci to the miniatures created by Greg Gilbert, there’s something for all to enjoy.

These exhibitions are free for all to experience until Monday, 6th May 2019.

Leonardo da Vinci: Life in Drawing

Everybody is welcomed to come to the gallery to explore twelve of Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings. They showcase a wide range of the painter’s talent with the brush strokes used. The art on showcase is infused with details of engineering, botany, anatomy and more.

The event is inspired by the five hundredth anniversary marking the death of Leonardo da Vinci. The exhibition organized by the Royal Collection Trust in collaboration with twelve museums and galleries aims to showcase the painter’s work across multiple cities in the UK simultaneously, and gives the public the chance to learn more about the incredible masterpieces from one of the greatest painters to have ever lived.

Drawings from Southampton’s Collections

The Southampton Permanent Collection has provided the Southampton City Art Gallery with paper drawings. The drawings loaned to the gallery by the Royal Collection illustrate in detail characteristics typical of the art of painters such as Leonardo da Vinci and will aim to draw visitors’ attention to the styles of painters from this era. The event is linked to the Leonardo da Vinci: Life in Drawings gallery exhibition, which is happening at the same time in the same location.

Greg Gilbert

This exhibition is a continuation of Greg Gilbert’s solo exhibition from 2015. The event will aim to reveal the different stages of Gilbert’s art process. The Gallery will put on show photorealistic miniatures transforming to a collection of surreal imaginings, going in depth to study the artist’s ability to create.

Alongside the drawings, a collection of his poetry will also be on display. They reflect the difficulties of the artist’s health. The poetry pieces have been chosen by Carol Ann Duffy as one of her Laureates’ Choice publications.
