What are the best family-friendly attractions in Southampton?
With its position on the south coast, Southampton’s strongly associated with water. While you’re in Southampton, you must explore its maritime connections as well as its fascinating history.
SeaCity Museum
This is one of the best free things to do in Southampton. Discover the stories of people’s lives in the city and on the water, dating back to the early 1900s. One of the highlights is the interactive model of the Titanic which set sail from here back in 1912.
Take a boat trip
Get out on the water itself. You can take a cruise on the Solent or River Hamble. The historic Hythe ferry crossing is a lovely experience. It’s only a 20 minute crossing (which is often enough with young kids). It takes you from Southampton to the village of Hythe, taking in the sights and sea air along the way.
The Quays
Make a splash at The Quays swimming and diving complex. There are 10m and 18m diving boards for budding Tom Daleys. The waterslides and leisure pool are brilliant fun for various ages. It’s a great place to get active as a family.
Solent Sky Museum
This museum is home to 20 historic planes from the early 20th century. The Supermarine Spitfire came from Southampton and it’s one of the incredible aircraft that you can admire at the Solent Sky Museum. You’ll also see extraordinary seaplanes and flying boats. Kids can sit in the pilot’s seat and picture themselves flying the plane.
Tudor House and Garden
Step back in time at Tudor House where you can explore over 800 years of history. The timber-framed house dates back to the 15th century. The interactive displays are great for engaging younger visitors. Look out for their workshops and activities for kids too. Their art clubs are particular favourites.
