Chinese New Year’s one of the most important dates in the Chinese calendar. It’s not about the end of the calendar year. It relates to the lunar new year. It signifies the end of winter and the start of spring. That’s why it’s also called the Spring Festival. Chinese New Year Festivals are celebrated by Chinese communities worldwide.

Belfast is no exception. Each year, Chinese New Year celebrations take place in the city centre. Discover more about Chinese New Year events in Belfast for 2026.

When is Chinese New Year 2026?

The date of Chinese New Year differs each year. The first day of the festival falls on the new moon that appears between 21st January and 20 February. In 2026, that’ll be on 17th February. That date marks the start of a 16 day Spring Festival.

Chinese New Year is a time for celebrations, longstanding traditions and hopes for good fortune in the coming year.

In the Chinese calendar, each year’s represented by one of the 12 animals of the zodiac. In the past few years we’ve seen The Year of the Tiger, the Rabbit and the auspicious Year of the Dragon. In 2026, we’ll enter the Year of the Horse and say goodbye to the Year of the Snake. The Year of the Horse brings with it a vibrant energy. It signifies adventure, vitality and momentum. Sounds good to us!
